We love the Bicibús! It gets our kids out on their bikes, ready for school and feeling confident! They bike more with their friends and on their own now, too. And the Bicibús has really helped us see how we could ride more/drive less – being out with a larger group of bikers has shown us what a difference it makes when the streets feel safer and easier to navigate.
After riding to school with the Bicibús, my son became much more enthusiastic about riding his bike to more places in the neighborhood. He loved the freedom, fresh air, and fun of riding his bike. Now my daughter who is in first grade can’t wait until she’s able to ride her bike to school.
The Bicibús has been transformational for our family. We have learned so much about urban biking for transport (not just for fun) and the sense of community it fosters is unparalleled. We love the Bicibús!
I like riding my bike and sometimes my friends are there and I get to chat with them before school.
I want my baby girl to have different experiences and to develop her every milestones in life to be come a strong independent little lady. Also, biking is super cool! Last yesterday I signed my daughter up for Girls on gear bike club where she now rides a bike without training wheels. This club would continue developing her motor skills and social cue and learn to interact with her team.
We did Bicibús a few times late last spring and immediately fell in love. My 1st grader felt so energized and excited. The sense of community and just being outside and active started our days on the right foot. As another example whenever I brag about it to friends I share how it is fairly common to have at least one small fall or crash. In fact I think every time we rode there was one. Most minor one or two that broke skin. But in EVERY case- the child was quickly met and literally lifted up by adults and friends and were smiling by the next block. A fall that would be ride ruining on a family bike trip is a perfect example of lifting each other up and going forward with the Bicibús.

What is a bicibús?
It is a group of students biking to school together. Biking together makes the trips safer and more fun.
What are the four rules of the bicibús?
1) Respect the leader
2) Ride on the right-hand side
3) Ride in a straight line
4) HAVE FUN!
How can my student join the bicibús?
Your student can meet the bicibús at one of the “stops” at the appointed time. If an adult is not coming with your student, please write down your name and contact number and give it to the leader of the bicibús, so we can get in touch if there are any issues. You are sending your student at your own risk.
Can people join the Bicibús between stops?
Yes! Just be on the righthand side of the street when we pass by, and you can slot right in.
Who can come on the bicibús?
The bicibús is open to everyone.
Can adults come too?
Yes! You’re not required to send an adult with your student, but you’re welcome to come along! If you’d like to volunteer as a leader (whether you have kids or not), please contact us.
What happens to my student’s bike after they get to school?
Students can lock up their bikes at one of Key’s many bike racks. Families are responsible for getting the bikes home after the bicibús. Some adults meet their student after school or extended day and ride home. Some adults pick up their student and the bike in a car after school or extended day.
What does my student need to bring on the bicibús?
Students need to be on a bike (no scooters, no training wheels) and wear a helmet (Virginia law for those under 14). They’ll need a lock if they’re going to lock up at school. It’s also smart to dress for the weather.
How do students carry their backpacks?
Many students wear their backpacks while they ride. There may be a cargo bike on the ride, where students are welcome to put their backpacks.
Any advice on buying a bike?
If you’re looking to buy a bike, I highly recommend starting at Phoenix Bikes. They sell used bikes and teach kids how to fix bikes. They have a earn-a-bike program for kids 12 & older. For adults, you can also try out Capital Bikeshare – contact us if you’d like information about discounted memberships.
