Arlington is a great place to ride a bike, with safe, comfortable routes reaching most of the County. But many of these routes wind through neighborhood streets and trails, with turns that aren’t obvious or marked. Enter the Happy Wheels Network!


SSAFETY has crowdsourced these safe and comfortable bike routes – the routes we would send our kids, our friends who are new to biking, our parents on. These are now the Happy Wheels Network. Scroll down for more information about the routes and see the full map here.
We’ve started marking these routes with signs on the streets – the progress is noted below. We need your help to finish the job!

The Network comprises seven routes that span Arlington County – the BOLDED routes have signs on the streets for all or part of the route!:
- Grover: a north-south route connecting the Custis Trail in Cherrydale with the W&OD Trailhead in Green Valley – Signs mark the route from Cherrydale to 7th Street South
- Von Count: an east-west route using 6th, 7th and 8th Streets South to connect the 27/Washington Blvd Trail to the W&OD Trail
- Elmo: an east-west route connecting the 50 Trail in Lyon Park with the W&OD Trail in Arlington Forest
- Ernie: an east-west route connecting Rosslyn to East Falls Church Metro, running south of Langston Blvd – Signs mark the route from Rosslyn to Glebe
- Bert: an east-west route connecting the Custis Trail in Cherrydale to Bishop O’Connell High School, running mostly north of Langston Blvd – Entire route is marked
- Fozzie: a north-south route connecting Williamsburg Middle School to Kenmore Middle School
- Oscar: a north-south route connecting Williamsburg Middle School to Upton Hills Regional Park
Note that, in the full map, the “Problem Areas” layer identifies stretches and intersections that require extra caution, which those in red been more problematic than those in orange.
